Anne Patrick's Kill Shot

My guest today is Anne Patrick. Anne is the author of more than a dozen novels of Romance, Mayhem & Faith, including the award-winning and best-selling Fire and Ash, Lethal Dreams and Sabotage. Her heroines are usually strong willed, witty, and often very opinionated…combinations that usually land them in situations where death seems imminent.

When she isn't working on her next novel she enjoys spending time with family and friends, and traveling to foreign countries to experience new cultures and adventures.

It’s great to have you visit my little corner of cyberspace, Anne. Since we both share the same first name things may get confusing, so I’ll use my initials to differentiate between us. Sound good? Okay. Let's talk writing!

AKA - Tell us about your most recent release.

Anne P. - Kill Shot is the first book in my Wounded Heroes Series.

Here is the blurb:

Former combat medic Kory Wagner has been in four war zones, served three tours in Iraq, survived countless firefights, RPG’s, IED’s and even a helicopter crash.  Now she’s home and out of the Army for good and someone is trying to kill her in her own backyard.  Just as disturbing is the handsome sheriff who’s on the case.

Sheriff Sean Harding doesn’t quite know what to think of the decorated veteran that managed to outsmart an entire search party.  What bothers him more is the body of a PI, whom she hired to find her sister's killer, was found dead in a building Kory owns.  And Kory isn’t being very cooperative with helping him find the answers as to why someone would kill her sister and want her dead.  Will he be able to keep her alive along enough to discover the truth?

AKA - What one how-to write book is a must on your bookshelf? Why?

Anne P. - Stephen King's On Writing.  I've read it several times.  I love his straightforward approach and honesty.

AKA – On Writing is one of my favorites as well. I can still see that bunny in the cage! I often write while sitting in my car. Parked. In my driveway! I call it my “cone of silence”. My very own writer’s cocoon, if you will. Do you have a unique place to write? Tell us about it.

Anne P. – I do my best writing in my comfy rocking chair with my laptop and a good supply of sunflower seeds and diet coke nearby.

AKA – How long does it take you to write a book?

Anne P. - Once the research is out of the way and I'm in my zone, six to twelve weeks is the norm.

AKA – If you could just snap your fingers and go, where would you visit, return to, or move? Why?

Anne P. - El Salvador.  I visited there a few years ago and absolutely loved it.  The people I met were amazing, and it's so beautiful.  The beaches are great too!

AKA – How many books have you written to date? Are you most proud of one in particular? If so, why?

Anne P. - I have twelve published and five others under contract.  The one I'm most proud of is No Greater Love (written under the name Kinzie Monroe).  It was one of my toughest to write.

AKA – Of all the characters you’ve created, does one hold a special place in your heart? Why?

Anne P. - Sadie from Fire and Ash.  She's faced a lot of adversity in her life but she has used her experiences to benefit others, and I love her sense of humor and zest for life.

AKA – Quick. Your five favorites – author, actor, movie, song, quote.

Anne P. – Author: Dee Henderson, Actor: Johnny Depp, Movie: The Family Stone, Song: Freebird, Quote: "All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them." ~ Walt Disney

AKA – Where can readers reach you online?

AKA – You’re offering a give away of a pdf copy of Kill Shot to one lucky reader. What question would you like them to answer to qualify for the draw?

Anne P. - What do you think makes a good story?

AKA – Thanks so much for dropping by, Anne.

Readers, I’ll announce the winner of Kill Shot here on November 23, so please leave a comment to win!

As always your participation is appreciated and your comments welcome.

Happy reading!

  1. What makes a good story, Anne? From my pov, I used to think "the plot" but that's not really true. Where the plot unfolds naturally as a result of the characterisations, that makes a good story for me. The steamy heat of a southern state that makes the characters restless is always a good start! But a plot with unusual twists has me reading and reading. Don't like anything predictable. Heroes and heroines with issues I adore. For me, that makes a good book.

  2. Like you, Vonnie, I used to think plot was king. Memorable characters, however, trump them every time!

  3. A good story is one that is unpredictable and has you wanting to know more. Also you have to feel what the characters are going through and sympathize with their predicament. Ending is everything for me... so it has to have a grand finale too. There is nothing like the feeling of finishing a good book!

  6. It's all about the characters for me, and just yeasterday I did an all day workshop just on this. teaching us how to use personality tests to create characters. I expecially enjoyed learning what the typical flaws are to certian personality types, and what would drive them crazy in another person...ah ha! Confict! I'm ready to dive into my stories to ruffle some feathers.

  7. Hi Anne and Vonnie,
Thanks for the interesting interview. Kill Shot sounds like another suspenseful Anne Patrick book that keeps the reader on the edge of her seat. I love the idea of having a cocoon for writing. I'm going to look for such a place.

  10. Okay, folks, I have read this story, and it's great! It's clean, mystifying, has a super dog companion, and is placed in an ideal setting. (I won't tell where)

You can't go wrong with one of Anne's books! :)

  11. Good interview. Your Wounded Heroes series sounds great. Good, well-rounded characters are important but there have been a few times that I've stuck with flat characters and mediocre writing just because the story was fascinating so go figure. :-/ There's something to be said for story-TELLING skills.

  12. Great interview and informative. I carry characters with me. Sometimes I hate to finish a book because I don't want to say good bye to them quite yet! Thanks for the post.

  13. Hi Katy, those personality tests do reveal a great deal. About our characters, and about ourselves!

  14. Hi Gail, I found how productive I can be inside my 'cocoon' quite by accident, but not I doubt I could live without it. The best part is no interruptions. It works!

  17. Kill Shot sounds like an intense story. You must have spent a ton of hours researching for it. Were you in the service? The heroine sounds like quite a woman.
    Loved your interview.

  18. hi Annie, I read excerpt of Kill Shot. Of course, I love its fast pace and main character.

You asked 'What do you think makes a good story?'

I might be wrong but I believe there's more than one thing that makes a good story. A story should begin with a hook/inciting incident which immediately draws the readers. Then it's the main character which in my opinion should be written in deep POV so the reader can get a glimpse inside their head. And of course there's showing. To me showing shows more than telling what the
character is doing and of course each action chracter takes should move the story forward and each conflict gets worser and worser.

  21. Sarah, I was not in the service but I do have a couple of friends who were. One still is. They've been very instrumental with research for this series. They, like all the other brave souls serving our country, inspired this series. I've dedicated it to them.

Thanks again everyone. I appreciate all your comments.
